Exhaled air is associated with discomfort in the indoor environment. People often associate them with high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). However, this is not so harmful in itself at low levels. Along with the concentration of CO2, the concentration of other substances in the air rises, and these are the cause of the symptoms of breathless air. Carbon dioxide rises very similarly to these, but (unlike the other substances) it is easy to measure and is therefore a great indicator of indoor air quality.
